A diaphragm chuck is a type of workholding device used in manufacturing and machining processes to securely hold and clamp a workpiece. It is commonly employed in precision machining operations where a high degree of accuracy and concentricity is required. Diaphragm chucks are especially useful for holding thin-walled or fragile workpieces that might be damaged or distorted by other clamping methods. The key feature of a diaphragm chuck is its construction, which consists of a flexible diaphragm made of a resilient material, often rubber or elastomer, that surrounds and grips the workpiece when clamped. The diaphragm is usually mounted inside a rigid outer housing. When the chuck is tightened, the diaphragm deforms and exerts radial pressure evenly around the circumference of the workpiece, securely holding it in place. This design allows for a uniform and gentle grip on the workpiece, minimizing distortion, deformation, or damage.
